The Next Step: Nakia Heads to College

by Jocelyn Wolff

In Nakia’s words, “Last semester was over before I even knew it began.” Nakia graduated in December, a semester before most of her peers. By January, she was enrolled in Chemistry Lab, Belly Button Biology, Advanced Poetry, and Archway Seminar at NWU. She says, “Advanced Poetry [was my favorite] because it was the least out of my comfort zone and I forged many new friendships within the class.” Although she has not declared a major yet, this self-described lover of learning plans to declare majors in Psychology and Criminal Justice.

Outside of class Nakia keeps herself busy with her sorority, Alpha Gamma Delta. Nakia said, “I knew I wanted to join as many activities as I could fit into my schedule, but after a few weeks I decided that joining a sorority was a better option.” She credits Alpha Gamma Delta for holding her accountable for her school work and helping her feel more included, rather than isolated, in this new environment. Two of Nakia’s favorite things about NWU are the, “small, close knit community with students and faculty who genuinely care,” as well as the many opportunities NWU presents to get involved, meet new people, and excel in the classroom.

Nakia continued her theme of academic accountability when asked what the top five things she learned this semester are. Her list includes:

  1. School comes first
  2. I can’t fall behind or give up because grades fall quickly
  3. It is easy to make friends when you put yourself out there
  4. Be open to new experiences
  5. It’s not a fashion show– sweatpants are okay once in a while

So, what advice can Nakia offer to our newly graduated Senior Leaders who will be starting their first semester of college in the fall? “Get involved right away, but don’t let an activity or a friend group become your first priority. School needs to come first.”
